Friday Reads - April 7, 2017
I didn't have as much time for reading this week as I have in past weeks, mostly because of book stuff ramping up! Eee! This past Tuesday was ARC day for Something Beautiful, and reviews are starting to come in. It's both exciting and terrifying! I'm trying not to creep on Goodreads too much - I have read enough (and blogged about enough) books to know that not everyone likes the same things, so there are people out there who are bound to not like my book. But anyway! That has nothing to do with reading and everything to do with writing and publishing. So! This week! I've had this book on my TBR for years, and I finally read it. It was worth the wait, because Mindy Kaling is so funny.
Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) by Mindy Kaling
I don't know why it took me so long to sit down and read it! I enjoyed it immensely, and finished up Thursday night just in time to start Tome Topple (read on to learn more about that). Mindy Kaling is funny, has a fresh voice, and knowing that she had to pay her dues before she got where she is makes me feel better about the 5 years it took Something Beautiful to see the light of day as an actual book. It reminded me a lot of Amy Poehler's book, Yes Please, which I also finished on audio this week. That was another good one. So funny. I love funny women.
And now I'm moving into something completely different, and I have no segway. So.
I’m new to watching videos on booktube, but I have been especially enjoying the Thoughts on Tomes channel. Sam seems like someone who would be my friend, which is probably why I enjoy watching her videos. Anyway! She helps run a two-week challenge twice a year called Tome Topple, which is where you read big, daunting books (500+ pages). And since I’m pretty far ahead in my reading challenge, I’ve decided to participate! The challenge runs from April 7-20 (midnight to midnight), and I’m going to try to read two books in that time—the last two (released) books in the Throne of Glass series, Queen of Shadows and Empire of Storms.
These books (well, this series) have problems, so this may be a bit of a hate-read. Could this series BE any more white?
But also, I feel like I’ll love parts of them too? Anyway. I needed an excuse to finish the dang series, and here it is! (I hate not finishing series unless I REALLY REALLY hate them, which hasn’t happened in a long time. It’s the reason I still finished the Divergent trilogy even though I hated everything about Insurgent. Conclusions are my jam.) Thank you to Sarah J. Maas for writing ridiculously long books. *eye roll* Once I finished Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? last night, I dove right into Queen of Shadows. Yay?
What are you reading this week?
