Welcome to my website. I mostly talk about books and writing, but you never know what else I might chat about. I'm glad you're here!

Weekend Reads + Update (April 15 & 16, 2017)

Weekend Reads + Update (April 15 & 16, 2017)

So! I didn’t post a blog on Friday. I apologize. It was a weird week, which I can finally talk about. Are you ready for this?

I had jury duty.

Sure, that sounds boring and mundane, but it was anything but. First, I was selected for the jury after a lengthy jury selection process on Monday. We heard testimony from Tuesday through Thursday and then had to retire to the jury room for deliberations. We were deliberating until about 8:30 pm Thursday night, and then reconvened at 9 am Friday morning. Before noon, we had a verdict. Then we had to go into the sentencing phase, because at least one of our verdicts was guilty (there were multiple counts—I don’t want to say anything more in this medium). And then we got to talk to the judge and the lawyers, after we delivered the sentences. The whole thing felt like another world. But now I’m back. And don’t you worry, I’ve been reading.

Tome Topple Update

I’ve been toppling some tomes! Only one so far, but I’m working on it.

Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas

This is the fourth book in the Throne of Glass series, and I’ve been hesitant to dive back in after Heir of Fire (book 3). I kind of hated HoF. It was… I don’t know. Sprawling? The stories didn’t connect and it took me way too long to understand and appreciate both Rowan and Manon, and they were integral parts of the story. By the time I got to QoS, I did appreciate them both, and it made me enjoy the story a lot more. (I finished early yesterday morning.) It was adventurous and Aelin was strong again. There were problems, like lack of diversity (WHY WAS IT SO WHITE) and ableism (especially at the end). I’ve heard the problems get worse in the next one, which leads me to…

Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas

I started this one yesterday and am about a hundred pages in. And… eh. So far, it’s been unimpressive, and even more characters have points of view, which is confusing. AND we haven’t heard from Chaol and Nesryn again, which goes into the ableism thing, I’m guessing. So! Here we are – I have 5 more days of tome toppling ahead of me before I get back to my usual programming. :)

What have you been reading this weekend?
