Hi.

Welcome to my website. I mostly talk about books and writing, but you never know what else I might chat about. I'm glad you're here!

You (write) Fancy

I’m not sure I’ve mentioned this, but I’ve always been a big lover of handwriting.  I like messing with mine, changing it and making it different for different occasions.  I even have a tattoo that is in my own handwriting.  Because of that, I thought it would be easy for me to learn calligraphy to address our wedding invitations.  Let me tell you, the strokes of the writing were one thing.  I’m still not great at remembering to pick my pen up after every letter, but I’m working on it.  It was the ink that I was worried about, though.  I didn’t want to spill at work.  Anyway, this is what I’m getting at: H’s sister and her fiancé asked me to address their wedding invitations.  And I’ve been loving it, absolutely loving it.

First, though, I found a pen that would prevent me from having to worry about spilled ink.  The one I love the most is from the Zig brand, and it’s wonderful.2014-10-09 15.48.17

So, I’ve come up with a process, with H’s help.  I’ve been taking the blank envelope fronts (the return address is on the flap)…2014-10-09 15.33.12

And making lines with a pencil.2014-10-09 15.33.21

I used a spreadsheet to keep track of how many lines each address would need, and then I count from the bottom, starting with “Mr. and Mrs.” on its own line.2014-10-09 15.35.43

I begin with the name…2014-10-09 15.36.46

And then finish off the address.  (Blurred to the best of my ability with an iPhone camera.)IMG_4074

Then, I erase the lines, and I have this wonderful finished product!  Well, I think it’s wonderful.  I hope H’s sister likes it, too!IMG_4076

I’m excited to practice with the actually calligraphy pen some more, because H really wants me to use the real ink for our own invitations.  So, we’ll see about that.  But I really like this, and would be okay with a pen like this addressing ours, as well.

What do you think?
