Hi.

Welcome to my website. I mostly talk about books and writing, but you never know what else I might chat about. I'm glad you're here!

"Team" by Lorde

Listen here. I’m not sure if you’ve heard this yet (or potentially seen it at the Grammy’s), but Lorde is a little strange.  But she’s also seventeen.  Can you remember being seventeen?  I was weird.[i]  Like, really weird.  But that’s in the past.  I try not to think about it too much.

People were making a big deal about her fingernails.

Anyway.  I digress.

There are two things that I love about this song.

  1. It’s not textbook.  You know, each verse doesn’t sound the same.  There are random bridges, that kind of thing.  It makes it more interesting.  It’s a good example of why people are saying that Lorde is a musical prodigy, that she’s a kind of genius.
  2. The chorus.  I love the chorus.

We live in cities you’ll never see on a screen

Not very pretty, but we sure know how to run things

Living in ruins of a palace within my dreams

And you know that we’re on each other’s team

It took me a couple of listens to completely understand what she was trying to say here.  And, upon several listens and the subsequent analysis that always happens when I listen to music, I discovered that the message is not very different from her first single, “Royals.”

“Royals” was about being happy with what you have.  And, to me, “Team” is about being happy with who is in your life.  You don’t need famous people, you don’t need celebrity.  You just need people to be on your team.  That’s really all.

Do you have good people in your corner?  I sure do, and I am thankful for them every day.

-A.

[i] Some might argue that I am still weird.
