Hi.

Welcome to my website. I mostly talk about books and writing, but you never know what else I might chat about. I'm glad you're here!

What it's like to be set up by your family

In honor of this disgustingly pink holiday, I thought I would say a little bit about love or something. I don’t know how many of you know this story, but H and I were set up by our families.  H’s uncle and my dad referee high school football together, and (with a little help from H’s aunt) they came up with the idea that H and I had to meet.  Because we were both nerdy.  At least, that’s the story I got from my dad.

So what does it feel like to be set up by your family?  Well, my date with H was the only blind date I’ve ever been on.  I trusted my dad’s judgment, and went into it thinking, at the very least, maybe I would make a friend.

But it’s scary at the same time, because there’s all this extra pressure.  What if it doesn’t go well – what does that say about how well my dad knows me?  I’ll have to answer all kinds of questions, relive a bad date over and over again.  Ugh.

But, alas, it obviously went well, because here we are a year and a half later.  H and I live together, he has helped me adopt a better lifestyle, and we are happy.  So happy.  It’s funny, really, how it worked out.

He's my lobster.

And now, it’s just sort of fun to tell the story.  The most common reaction (and my favorite) is “WHAAAAAAT??  You were set up by your DAD???”  Yes, yes I was.  He knows me, and he knows that I am, in fact, a nerd.  And H is an engineer, just like my dad, so that made it pretty seamless when it came time for them to meet.  Actually, everything was pretty seamless.  H fit right into my life, like it was meant to be.

He told me I’m not allowed to be sappy on this blog, so I better stop.  My point is this – if your family is close, and they know who you are, give it a chance!  What’s the worst that could happen?
